Fall is my favorite time of year in Colorado. Not only does it bring the beautiful yellows, oranges and reds of the season, but some of the best weather Colorado has to offer. This year why not try something new and different? I have put together my list of favorite things to do and links to register because we all know, everything takes a reservation these days.
Take a train ride through the beautiful Rocky Mountains. This has become one of my favorite things to do in the fall to see the colors while relaxing with a local cold brew or glass of wine on the Royal Gorge Railroad. The Georgetown Loop Railroad is a short drive of 45 minutes from Denver and is an absolutely gorgeous ride through hills of aspen groves and amazing views. The best time to take the railroad is a sunny day in September or early October during peak fall colors in the Mountains. If you have more time or you happen to be in Southern Colorado, make sure you ride the Durango/Silverton Railroad. This will give you some of the most brilliant colors in Colorado.
2. I love to drive through the mountains during peak season. I try to do it every year and stop for lunch at a new restaurant along the way. Guanella Pass is one of the most popular drives as well as Durango and Aspen. Be sure to check the peak dates and best places to stop along the way for best viewing and photos.
3. Once you have driven the highways and byways, detour a bit to find a trail that gets off the beaten path to explore with a hike or mountain bike in that cool, crisp mountain air. Check out these 5 Fall Bike Rides in Colorado.
4. Fall Festivals are so much more fun with kids from picking pumpkins for carving to corn mazes and apple cider. I went to so many with my kids when they were young, that it became a ritual, until they got to be too cool to participate. Some of my favorites are the Lone Creek Farms Pumpkin Patch, Chatfield Botanic Gardens Pumpkin Festival, Ya Ya Farms Apple Festival and, this year, Hudson Gardens has a new “Magic of the Jack-O-Lanterns” Festival.
5. Find you favorite Oktoberfest. This is more of an adult event. However, I am finding that more and more towns are incorporating things for the kids to do as well. Here is your list of upcoming Oktoberfest events around the Colorado 2022. Be sure to save on the hassle of parking and be safe by calling for an Uber or Lyft in and out of the event.
6. My absolute favorite thing to do in the fall is to get away for a long weekend to experience a new town or area in Colorado. This year we will be visiting Steamboat Springs during the fall colors and to enjoy Strawberry Park Hot Springs before the crowds hit the slopes for the season. Find a new town or area to explore and relax. Fall and late spring are the best times to get great deals on lodging in the, otherwise, very expensive mountain towns like Vail, Steamboat, Winter Park, Durango and so many more. How about Glenwood Springs for the Hot Springs pools or Vail for a round of golf or Grand Lake for a beautiful hike in Rocky Mountain National Park. These are all amazing places that are full of Adventures. There is so much to do and to explore in Colorado in September and October.
Make every weekend a new Adventure this fall and if you find an area that you absolutely love and want to create amazing family memories for many weekends to come, consider getting pre-approved for that second home in the mountains that you have always dreamed about.
